Credits: 4 hrs (4 one-hour lectures/week and 2 two-hour lab/week). Laptop course. Class Schedule: SUMMER 2020 - TBD Instructor: Course Description: This course is designed for the undergraduate and graduate students interested in Soil Information Systems (SIS) and its applications in various fields, such as forestry, wildlife and fisheries biology, landscape design, geology, real estate and others. Soil Information Systems include input, storage, analysis and output of soil information through the use of Geographic Information Technologies (GPS, direct/remote sensing, GIS) and Soil Data Systems (soil survey, laboratory data and soil data storage). Course is based on lectures and computer, laboratory, and field exercises. Prerequisites: Introductory chemistry and geology or permission of the Instructor. Course Learning Outcomes: Students will learn fundamental soil science concepts and definitions, and use Web Soil Survey and Soil Data Mart to map and evaluate soil in different geographical locations, develop State Soil Project demonstrating their newly acquired knowledge, and illustrating soil data with constructed graphs and tables. Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend every lecture/laboratory unless classes have been officially canceled by the University. Attendance will be recorded at every lecture/laboratory and it is used in grade calculation (see Grading Policy). Students who miss more than 4 class meetings (without an official excuse, e.g. doctor's note etc.) will be dropped from the course. If you miss a class, you are responsible for the material covered during that class. If the professor is more than 15 minutes late for class, the class is considered cancelled and the students may leave. Email: Please check your Clemson email address at least once a day for potential messages dealing with this course. Do not forward your Clemson mail to another account (Yahoo, AOL, etc.) as those accounts tend to have issues like full in-boxes and limitations on attachments.

Notification of Absences: "Instructors may encourage students to use the Notification of Absence module in MyCLE (http://mycle.clemson.edu) to inform instructors of either an anticipated or an unanticipated absence. Following is the introductory statement on the CCIT website describing this program: “Students may now send a notice electronically to their professors of either an anticipated or unanticipated absence through MyCLE/Blackboard. With the Notification of Absences module, students can quickly notify all of their instructors of an absence. It remains the student’s responsibility to follow-up with professors to discuss any work which may be missed. A professor may require documentation (e.g., a walk-out statement from Redfern); as always, the professor is the one who determines if a student’s absence is excused or unexcused.” All other aspects of class attendance are within the discretion of the instructor, department, or college responsible for the course." Reading Assignments: Soil Science and Management by Edward J. Plaster (4th Edition) is optional (please make sure you get the third edition). Several copies of these textbook are available from the library. Laboratory and Assignments: There will be laboratory and/or assignments every week except when noted by the instructor. Exams and Quizzes: There will be three in-class exams during the semester. In-class exams will include material from both lectures and readings. The final exam will be cumulative and will consist of a number of short-answer questions. At the beginning of some class periods, there will be short-answer quizzes (suprise!) based on the reading assignments. No make-up quizzes and exams are allowed (unless there is a doctor's note). Bonus points and opportunities will be only available to the students who did not miss any exams and quizzes. Contact your Instructor for further clarification. Bonus Points: There will be bonus points opportunities in the class to encourage active student participation. Bonus points will be added up at the end of the semester and used in final grade determination. Grading Policy:

Retention of Examinations: "Clemson University faculty who exercise their right to retain student examinations are required to retain those examinations on file for the 90 (ninety) calendar day duration (exclusive of summer) allocated for final grade protests in the form of academic grievances." Posting of Grades: "The United States Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prohibits the public distribution of grades or graded work. This is commonly understood to include posting grades by student names, initials, or student social security number. It also is understood to include placing of graded material in a public place where students go through the material to find their own graded work."
